About FotoMaps
History
It started as a personal project to display my photos in a unique way so that my family could see where I'd been. My friend said "Hey this is really cool. I bet other people would want this." And so FotoMaps was born.
Hi, my name is Benek. I created Fotomaps. I've been designing and developing websites and Flash for 7 years (my portfolio).
In 2006 I moved from the States to New Zealand with my Kiwi wife Jenny. As a hobby photographer I knew I'd want a fresh new photo gallery to display my travel shots and then continually update it with new photos as I saw more of the country.
I wanted something different from the norm. Something that would show where my photos where taken. Something that was fun to navigate and explore.
I eventually came up with nz.ography. I loved it because of the interface, and how easy it was to add photos. After a weekend trip to the beach, I could have the photos up in minutes for my family to see.
And then, with some inspiration from Jenny, nz.ography spawned FotoMaps. I added some more features and made it more customizable. I developed a system to easily change the map, the colors, the text, so anyone could use it and make it just how they wanted.

What's new in version 2
The original version of FotoMaps was great, but it was designed specifically for my own purposes. When other's started using it, it became apparent that some changes would be required to make it more flexible and customizable. I received a lot of useful feedback and I've been hard at work making improvements to FotoMaps. Here's what's new in version 2.0:
- Redesigned interface with a sleeker look and quicker navigation
- New features like a zoom slider, cache control, photo frames
- Revamped config file with many new options - you now have the ability to turn on/off all of the features
- Brandable - add your own logo and link to the menu bar
- Permalinks to each photo or slideshow so you can bookmark and share links to photos within the application
- Improved photo captions, now auto-expanding to fit all of your content
- Improved slideshow control, including keyboard navigation
- Improved "About" screen with more control over formatting and support for HTML links
- Photo links - specify any URL to jump to when a photo is clicked
- Background music
